A few people sharpen their spears as they discuss the upcoming hunt. After downing a few gulps of water and some dried meat, you collect your supplies in a bag for the day.You go out hiking with a few close relatives and friends to a berry patch. As you pick the ripest berries and place them in your basket, you overhear a funny story that your cousin shares about a conversation that morning. Laughter erupts. The day carries on, dragging the sun along the sky. Beads of sweat accumulate on your forehead while your basket grows heavier. Finally, you hear a call from a fellow forager. After another tiring yet satisfying day, you curl up in your corner in the cave and drift asleep. At what point would the concept of happiness enter your head? Were we happier a few millennia ago than we are in the present day?We Should Be Happier Today, But Were NotBy contrast, we should be happier today. We have TVs, metal devices that transport us from one place to another and access to clean water and food from all over the world. When we learn about diseases and medical treatments from the past, we cringe at the thought of plagues, bloodletting, and l eeches, thankful that we have things so much better today. But if things are so much better now, are we much happier than we were then? The other day, I was involved in a discussion on what it means to be happy. There were a variety of responses on the topic. People said things such asIf I could get whatever I wanted, I would be happy.Happiness is about having a balance of work, family, friends, and health.Mindset is the key to happiness. All of these explanations make sense on the surface. It seems that happiness is centered on getting what we want, having a positive mental state, or both. And yet, while all these ideas sound great in theory, the reality is starkly different. For instanceThere are some people with great jobs that should be happy, but arent. If the recipe to happiness is having a great balance of work, family, and health, why do people with all this feel bored and dissatisfied?Mindset is important, to be sure. But if happiness is simply a choice, like an on/off switch in the room, why cant people make themselves happy? The concept of happiness involves more than simply thinking your way towards it. And as society continues to evolve, things only get more complicated. Happiness, in the midst of all this, seems to move farther away. Why is that? Why is it that, despite the fact we have more conveniences, technology, and options than ever before, so many of us are unhappy or even depressed?Enter the Hedonic TreadmillTheres a concept called the hedonic treadmill. It states that humans have a tendency to revert to a baseline level of happiness despite the positive or negative events that occur in their lives.Lets look at this concept on a large scale. In society, advancements are made as time progresses. Electronic devices get smaller, machines become more productive, and we become more efficient as we discover new techniques and enhanced methodologies. Yet, when it comes to happiness, those improvements are also a double-edged sword. After a while, we get used to those levels of technology, healthcare, and productivity. We adapt. When conditions go up, so do our expectations. Unfortunately, those increased expectations leave us dissatisfied and wanting more.In our personal lives, we also run a hedonic treadmill to nowhere. We want things, and when we get them, we experience a small spike in excitement. But before long, we return to our baseline happiness level. Like a hamster turning a wheel, were perpetually fixed in a never-ending cycle.Astudywas performed that looked at the happiness levels of two very different groups of people recent lottery winners and accident victims that were left paraplegic. They were also compared to a control group consisting of an ordinary sample of people. While we might expect the lottery winners to be incredibly happy and the victims to be devastated, the results showed something else.Lottery winners rated the pleasure of everyday activities, such as hearing a joke, eating breakfast, or reading a mag azine, as no higher than the control group. Accident victims, on the other hand, werent as unhappy as one might expect. If anything, they rated slightly higher than lottery winners in the pleasure they felt from mundane activities.Although the lottery winners rated higher in present happiness than accident victims, the victims happiness levels were still higher than the midpoint of the happiness scale. The study also predicted that the effects of any significant event, whether positive or negative, would wear off with time. If anything, winning the lottery created a contrast effect in which nothing could ever measure up, making everything else from then on less enjoyable. In what is known asaffective forecasting, we like to predict how well feel about something in the future. Unfortunately, our predictions are wildly wrong. Were generally terrible at predicting what will make us happy. We believe attaining something will give us lasting happiness, when others who get what we wanted ar e no happier in the long run. Or, we think we want one thing if put in a certain situation, but when were actually there, we want something completely different. When you combine our inability to recognize what we really want and tendency to adapt, its no surprise were never quite satisfied.Seeking Happiness No Matter the ConditionsHappiness is more than simply the circumstances were in. No matter our conditions, we tend to acclimatize to just about anything if given enough time.On one hand, getting used to our circumstances can be a positive. Something unfortunate happens, were temporarily devastated, but then we gradually revert back to life as usual. On the other hand, that same tendency can leave us dissatisfied. While we might feel on top of the world after reaching a milestone, our initial excitement wanes and were left wanting more.So how can we reach happiness, regardless of our current state and situation? Here are three ways1. Redefine happinessHappiness is associated with broad smiles, arms raised in celebration, and a general feeling of euphoria. When a positive outcome occurs, such as winning a competition or finally getting that promotion, you think, Im really happy. After a while, its back to the grind. Your happiness disappears. This is the modern state of happiness. If this sounds familiar, its time to change your perception. The problem with thinking about happiness as an emotion is that its a temporary state. It doesnt last. Instead, think of happiness as a way of life, away of living. For example, happiness isnt about painting a masterpiece. Happiness is about painting in the first place. Happiness isnt about receiving recognition for good deeds. Happiness is about helping others in the first place. When you shift the way you see happiness, you also shift your perception of everyday life. Happiness isnt about reaching the end goal because happiness is the end goal.2. Seek new experiencesThey say money can buy happiness. Well, sort of.Research h as shown that when given a choice, youre better offbuying experiences rather than objects. Objects provide that rush of excitement for only a brief period. Then we adapt. The object, no matter how unique, how shiny, how lavish, eventually loses its luster.Experiences, however, are temporary by nature. So, you soak up those moments and make the fruchtwein of it because you know it wont last (leaving only fond memories behind). Also, experiences are difficult to quantify in terms of which is better. You cant definitively say that a trip to Brazil was superior to a weekend camping outdoors. Each experience is different and novel, providing greater satisfaction in the long run than adding another decorative item to your home.3. Connect with peopleThe great irony with todays communication devices is that in some aspects, its become more difficult to connect with people. While we savor the convenience of being able to send an email or a text, we forgo that face-to-face interaction that wou ld have been necessary in the past.Sometimes, it even feels preferable to hide behind a screen rather than talk to a real, live person. Weve come to accept our lives of solitude, isolated from others. But tribes have their strength.Back in our ancestors days, people worked together, ate together, and lived together. While staying in groups was necessary for survival, there was also a sense of assurance in knowing we could rely on others for help and that they were facing the same joys, trials, and tribulations.Today, we still rely on networks to survive. We communicate with others to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and support one another in achieving goals.Joining a community or calling up a friend might be just what you need to set yourself on a new path. Signing up for a new experience can lead you to meet interesting people. When you invite serendipity into your life, you increase the chance for opportunities to emerge. Its Not That ur Ancestors Were Happier, Its That Expectatio ns Have ChangedThink about it. If people truly were much happier in prehistoric times, then there wouldnt be an urge to keep progressing. Things would have stayed put, just the way they always have been. If people were happy with how things were, why would change be needed?Just as our long-ago ancestors grumbled when the water source was further away than at the last camping spot, we grumble today when the internet is down or even a little slower than usual. These are two very different situations, but they also parallel one another. After all, the problem is one and the same were not quite satisfied with the current situation, so sooner or later we have to do something to ignite change. While changes usually bring improvements, a host of new problems rise up as well. Sure, things may be objectively better, but our expectations go up too. In the end, we dont feel much better. Were forever on the treadmill. If thats the case, then its up to us to change the way we approach our circumst ances. Are you embracing the present (as opposed to reliving the past or daydreaming about the future)? Are you creating experiences for yourself? Do you put your electronic device down long enough to interact with the world around you? When you start taking responsibility for your actions, you start taking responsibility for your happiness. This article first appeared on Jump Start Your Dream Life.

3 Recruiting Strategies to Reduce Stress and Increase Staffing Placements

3 Recruiting Strategies to Reduce Stress and Increase Staffing PlacementsThe staffing industry is a fast-paced, competitive world and its speeding up. According to a recent report, 2018 Growth Hiring Trends in the United States, by our team here at Spark Hire, 77 percent of companies plan to increase their staff by 25 percent in the coming year. To compete against other staffing firms and in-house recruiters, you need to level-up your recruiting strategies. But this is harder than it seems. Youre already overwhelmed with everyday tasks, continual networking, client demands, and the stress of deciding who is the best fit for each open role. So who has time to sit down and re-assess recruiting strategies? The good news is you dont need to sit and wrack your brain for hours on complicated steps that will add more to your schedule and workload. With the right tactics, you can add advanced recruiting strategies to your plan while simultaneously reducing stress on the job. 1. Become a tec hnical expert fastStaffing agency recruiters dont have the luxury of recruiting for familiar roles. Unlike in-house recruiters, theyre tasked with being experts in various roles, fields, and industries. While you need to act fast in order to place top talent, its nearly impossible to successfully match candidates with roles if you dont fully understand the technical side of various industries. Knowing this puts a lot of stress and pressure on recruiters. Finding recruiting strategies that allow you to not only learn about complicated fields but also move quickly is a challenge. However, taking a small amount of time to become a knowledgeable expert will reduce stress immensely. Rather than feeling like youre interpreting clients cultures and specializations, youll feel like a confident expert. Make time to become an expert in each clients field. staffingClick To TweetBuild this technical confidence by signing up for industry trend email updates. Organize each industry into specific folders so youre not overwhelmed. When you find something interesting or seemingly impactful, reach out to clients to see how those trends impact their organization directly. This will save you from the stress of last-minute shuffles, better prepares you for candidate questions, and allows you to choose candidates with the know-how of an in-house recruiter. 2. Focus on the candidate experienceExternal recruiters work hard to keep clients (and money) funneling in. And fast-paced fields can quickly cause employee burnout, leaving the candidate experience to suffer. When relationships are at the focal point of your recruiting strategies, however, that burnout can be significantly reduced. Unfortunately, vague descriptions of company culture and ideal candidates create a domino effect. Relationships with candidates arent solidified, clients arent getting the candidates they need, and referrals drop. A positive candidateexperience cant be formed without quality relationships.Click To Tw eetWhen this happens in the staffing industry, its often due to recruiters feeling like outsiders looking in. And, in many scenarios, this is truly the case. No matter how hard you try, youll never know a companys culture, quirks, and perks like a direct employee. Let your recruiting strategies be proactive about this fact. Reduce your own stress by suggesting on-campus visits and interview lunches. This will help clients find the best fit for their team while reducing your stress of finding the best final placement. 3. Get a little craftySometimes qualified candidates arent popping up as quickly as you and your team hoped. To fix that, you simply go in and alter punkt details and job descriptions, right? Wrong. This isnt the way to deal with a slow influx of qualified candidates. While in-house recruiters can get away with this, your recruiting strategies need to be a bit different and this is a good thing. Needing to get creative, assess the situation, and consider both client an d candidate expectations makes you even more motivated and equipped to find the right fit for each position. Head-off the frustration of exhausting talent pools with creativity. Look into your clients social media networks and find passionate customers. Reach out and let them know the role youre looking to fill, why theyd be a great fit, and that youd appreciate any referrals. Get outside of the office and find industry-specific fundraising, networking, and awards events. These are great opportunities to connect with passive candidates are start meaningful, long-lasting relationships. Are you taking steps to reduce staffing employee stress? Tell us how

Female Workers Arent Saving Enough for RetirementHeres How to Change That

Female Workers Arent Saving Enough for RetirementHeres How to Change ThatFemale Workers Arent Saving Enough for Retirement- Heres How to Change That Whether retirement is decades away or just around the corner, saving for your work-free years may not be at the top of your mind while youre going through your nine-to-five - especially, a new report shows, if youre a woman.According to Bank of America Merrill Lynchs annual Workplace Benefits Report , a whopping 71 percent of women are worried about retirement, compared to 58 percent of men. Whats more, 61 percent of women believe they will have to work longer than theyd planned to make ends meet, while just 51 percent of men feel the same. Female employees also contribute less to their 401(k) and have $119,000 in investable assets on average, compared to $196,000 for men, the report says.Leanne Jacobs , financial wellness expert and author of Beautiful Money , says any number of factors could contribute to why women are saving less for retirement, from the gender wage gap to lost wages if a woman choose to stay at home to raise her kids. Jacobs explains, Women also tend to invest less than men do and for some, worry more about the stock market and feel less confident than men investing and managing their money. The good nachrichtensendung is that any woman can find better financial footing and start saving for retirement ASAP. Here are simple steps you can take today.Women are often nervous to take a high-level snapshot of their money, Jacobs says. They fear that their debt just might be overwhelming, so they often avoid calculating net worth. But Jacobs says knowing your net worth- what you have in assets after subtracting your debts- is the fastest way to make subtle shifts to accelerate savings and financial growth. After all, Jacobs points out, you may have more money to invest than you think you do. And if you dont, knowing your starting point can push you in the direction of paying down debt. While you can work with a financial professional, its easy enough to crunch these numbers on your own total up your assets (hings such as your investments, home or car you own, and anything else that you could turn into cash) and your liabilities (leistungspunkt card debt, school loans, car payments, and other debts). Then, subtract your liabilities from your assets. That number is your net worth. According to Jacobs, now that you have that number, no matter how high or low or even upsetting that it may be, it gives you a starting point to grow from and helps to create a loving sense of urgency for growing that number now.Another number you need to know before you start saving is your credit score. Why? That number is like a grade, Jacobs explains, that you can work to improve. Doing your score at least once a year will help you clearly understand and measure the progress youve made, she says. It will also help you create better habits, like paying your bills on time, and make you a better money manager. (And with that confidence, you may find it easier to invest your money for retirement.) Some banks and credit card companies now include a free credit score estimate as part of their services. You can also request a credit score once a year from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, by using the website Annual Credit Report .Now that you have a clearer picture of your financial situation, its time to start saving for retirement . But heres the thing if you have to think about doing it, chances are you wont.Jacobs suggests automating your savings to ease your retirement worries. If your company offers a 401(k), you can ask that a certain amount- usually, a percentage of your paycheck- be directly deposited into an account of your choice. If it doesnt offer a 401(k), work with a bank to set up an IRA or a Roth IRA, and schedule a monthly direct deposit from your checking account into that one.Even if you start small, you will see your wealth account grow eac h week which will create the power and momentum you need to want to save even more, encourages Jacobs. If youve done everything above and you still feel like youre not saving enough, Jacobs says, you may want to look for ways to add income to increase your savings. While you may not be able to take on another job, she suggests asking yourself, What skills, passions, or hobbies do you have that can make money on a few hours a week? We have more down time than we think, and if we look at that time as money making opportunity time, the skys the limit.

This is the reason most people get stuck in mediocrity

This is the reason fruchtwein people get stuck in mediocrityThis is the reason most people get stuck in mediocrityThe reason most people get stuck in mediocrity is because they refuse to fail. The reason people refuse to fail is because they associate failure with defeat. Their fear of defeat paralyzes them to the point that they wont move forward.People are notlage finished when theyre defeated theyre finished when they quit.People equate failure with rejection but adversity is required if we want to succeed. Were conditioned at a young age to be afraid of failure so we tiptoe into the world with the backbone of a wimp.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIt is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at allin which case, you fail by default- J.K. RowlingFew will become truly successful in business or life, so lets take a look at the real reason most people get stuck in mediocrity1. Suppress, ignore, or avoid negative emotionsWhen we make a mistake or experience a setback, we second-guess urselves and question ur abilities. As a result, we become afraid of failure and settle for mediocrity. The tragedy of life is often not in our failure, but rather in our complacency not in our doing too much, but rather in our doing too little not in our living above our ability, but rather in our living below our capacities- Benjamin E. MayModern culture tells us we should find ways to suppress or avoid negative emotion so weve become experts on how to push discomfort away. If youre like most people, youve gone to great length to suppress negative emotions like anger, jealousy, and fear. Its not that you dont feel them youve learned how to ignore them and pretend they dont exist.Recent research from the University of Texashas found that when we avoid emotions, it actually makes them stronger.Emotions are meant to activate our body and propel us into action. When we decide to bury, ignore, or suppress our emotions, even negative ones, we put physical stress on our body. How To Make It Work For You While you need to acknowledge your negative emotions, you shouldnt experience them all at once. It creates too much confusion in your brain. When you acknowledge your emotions one at a time, it makes them much easier to handle. Your amygdala, the emotional center of your brain, gets stuck when you suppress an emotion. When you acknowledge what bothers you, your frontal lobes get work. That is the region of the brain that solves problems and finds solutions.2. Never prepare for the worst that can happenThere may be a few twinkletoes who skip through life on the sheer power of optimism, but smarter (and successful) people understand that unless we prepare for the obstacles and roadblocks that will be thrown into our path, well continue to wallow in mediocrity.Begin each day by telling you rself Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishness- Marcus AureliusMarcus Aurelius was not a pessimist he was a realist who prepared himself for any outcome. He was a stoic who did not want to be surprised and caught off guard at what might happen during his day. He knew how it felt to fall flat on his face when confronted with the unknown or unexpected.Positive thinking is a cornerstone ofmental toughness. The ability to look at your day in a realistic way and remind yourself of what could go wrong is not pessimism. Its being smart. You will encounter rude bosses, conniving colleagues, and pain-in-the-ass customers. Why not prepare for them?FBI agents do not prepare for arrests by assuming everything will turn out OK. Live without good valuesLets face it- most people settle for mediocrity because theyre clueless about their values. I mean real values, not the shitty ones that are measured by money, sex, or power. These childless women are happy Why arent they believed

These childless women are happy Why aren't they believed These childless women are happy Why aren't they believed When Red Sky PR CEO Jessica Flynn told a leader at her workplace she had some exciting news to share, their interaction didn’t go as expected.“You’re pregnant!” exclaimed the other woman. “Um, nope,” Flynn said. “You’re getting married!” she guessed. Wrong again - Flynn informed her she was leaving to start her own company. That small interaction has stuck with Flynn for over a decade.“While I’d dealt with the incessant questions about my marital aspirations and my ticking time clock before and since, this is the anecdote I always remember,” Flynn said. “It crystalized that no matter what accomplishments I may achieve in the business world, in my community, in my relationships - there will always be the question about why I didn’t have children.”Women who choose not to have children have a variety of reasons for making this decision.“I never had any burning desire to have children. I thought it was just something that would happen along the way, but it didn’t,” Christina Previte, a lawyer, said. “I think it would’ve been nice to have children, but I personally don’t need to have children to feel complete or have a full and vibrant life.”“I will admit that when I was in my 20s and early 30s, I had assumed I would be a mother,” Jennifer Bauer, a life coach, said. “I didn’t question society’s expectations for my role as a woman. It took wisdom and experience to realize that I didn’t actually want that life.”Some women find opportunities to nurture and mentor others through their careers.“After suffering a miscarriage a few months after we got married, the choice was taken from me when we couldn’t get pregnant again,” Carol Gee, a writer, said. “After leaving the military, I began a career as an educator first at the junior college level and then university level. Being surrounded by students fulfilled my need to nurture, to mother, mentor and guide. I am ‘play mom,’ ‘second mom,’ ‘god mo mmy,’ and mother-figure to a number of young adults both with mothers and without.”“I was ambivalent about having children throughout my 30’s,” another woman, Michelle McAnaney, said. “I think my job working as a college consultant, helping high school students choose and apply to colleges, is enough to fulfill the nurturer in me. Because I work with my students virtually, I can travel frequently and I would have to drastically change my lifestyle to accommodate the needs of my children.”For other women, their reason to forgo traditional motherhood can boil down to a simpler, tongue-in-cheek reason - selfishness.“I chose not to have children because I’m selfish,” Brittany Garcia said. “It’s not a popular thing to say, but I am. I like to sleep late on the weekends. I like to spend my money on what I want. I don’t want to monitor my kids’ social media accounts, screen time, or manage curfews.”“I am able to be very selfish. What I mean by that is my li fe is not dictated by the needs of my children. I can travel whenever I want to, even on a moment’s notice,” Previte echoed.Unfortunately, although none of the above women’s decisions impacts anyone beyond themselves, we’ve still not reached a place societally where the choice to remain childless is free of judgment. For many, being subjected to other people’s opinions persists as a drawback of this lifestyle.“I honestly struggle to think of any drawbacks - other than the endlessly condescending nature of most of the rest of the world about it,” one woman, Ruth Attwood, explained.“When I was in my late 30s, I was dating an older man who’d had his children, was divorced, and wanted more,” Nancy Irwin, a doctor, said. “Over dinner one night in a restaurant fairly soon in our relationship, he was rather relentless in wanting to know why I’d never chosen to have children and did not plan to going forward. When I’d had enough of his peppering me with questions, I let him know that he was making me uncomfortable; he stated flat out: ‘Well, if you never have a child, you’re not really a woman.’I stood up, threw down some cash for my portion of the uneaten food, and walked out and hailed a cab.”Judgment comes frequently from members of one own family, too.“My mother-in-law refers to me as the mother of her unborn grandchildren - not even as her son’s wife, which would only be slightly less insulting,” Garcia said. “I have a master’s degree; I have a good job and am the primary breadwinner of our household. And yet my worth, in her eyes, lies only in my ability to bear children. Thankfully, my own mother thinks it’s wonderful that we live in a day and age where this truly is considered a choice and not just ‘what you do.’ ”Aside from hearing rude comments from other people, some women have also considered the question of who will care for them in the future as a drawback.“As I get older, I do think about not havin g children to do for me what my brothers and I have done for our dad, who has Alzheimer’s,” says Sandy Weaver. Despite this concern, Sandy found a solution: “Good insurance, good savings and good friends should take care of me, if and when a time comes that I can’t care for myself.”Whatever path you take, it’s ultimately your choice and life.“We all make our choices about where we put our time, energy and passion,” Flynn said. “So what makes one person’s choice better than any other? I’ve chosen to put my time and energies into my relationship with my partner, deep friendships, contributing and engaging in my community, and into my professional ambitions. If only the world would respect and value that.”“I get a lot of “you’ll change your mind,” which is just insulting,” Garcia said. “As if I haven’t carefully thought this through. I know that at the ripe old age of 36, the clock is ticking on this choice. And yet it’s still a choice I make eve ry morning when I take my birth control pill.”A version of this post previously appeared on  Fairygodboss, the largest career community that helps women get the inside scoop on pay, corporate culture, benefits, and work flexibility. 3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Your Job

3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Your Job 3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Your Job So, you’ve weighed all the pros and cons, and you’ve decided to resign from your current position. The decision could be a tough one or a no-brainer, but regardless, how you handle yourself- and your colleagues- after you’ve submitted that resignation letter is an important part of the process that many of us don’t consider. If you’re starting to plot your exit, consider these three tips to help smooth your transition and keep your reputation rock-solid after you’re gone. 1. Read Your Contract Deciding to quit your job will no doubt require you to consider a lot of factors. Pay, job satisfaction, and commute time probably come to mind, right? What many people forget, though, is the fine print. Depending on your role, you may have a contract with your current employer, which means how- and when- you resign will be important. Take one of my former colleagues several years back as an example. He had recently been transferred to my office from another location out of state, which the company had sponsored. All his moving expenses, as well as a travel allowance, had been paid up front, with the specific agreement he’d stay in the position for two years. If he left before that time was up, he was on the hook for all the moving expenses (which weren’t cheap). About a year and a half into his contract, he was offered a great opportunity someplace else and decided to resign. Naturally, the company wasn’t pleased, and immediately reminded him of the money he’d owe upon his departure. Ouch. Suddenly, that new job wasn’t making sense financially. If my colleague had taken the time to review his contract, however, he would’ve known he just had to wait six more months, and he’d be free to move on. If his new employer couldn’t wait that long, then he at least would’ve had the opportunity to factor those moving costs into his salary negotiation. The moral of the story? Before you hand over that resignation letter, make sure you’ve reviewed your contract with your employer. Whether it’s checking the length of your contract or finding out if going to a competitor will cause issues, reading the fine print will confirm you’re free and clear to resign without it costing you. 2. Keep it Under Wraps Once you’ve decided to move on, it’s tempting to share the news with your colleagues. Maybe they’re also considering getting out of there, or maybe you just want to let your work buddies know you’re moving on. Regardless of your reasons, though, resist the urge to spill the beans. News of departures travels quickly, and the best way to kill your reputation with your boss is for her to find out you’re leaving at the water cooler. I know this because, well, it happened to me early on in my career. I confided in one of my colleagues- someone I trusted- and it turns out, he couldn’t keep the secret. Part of the reason I was leaving was because I’d been offered a better position with a competitor, so my confidant took it upon himself to covertly alert my manager so she could be ready with a counteroffer when I gave her my notice. While I’m sure my colleague really was trying to help, he inadvertently stirred up quite a mess, with me smack in the center. My boss was naturally stressed by being put in the position of having to try to convince me to stay, but she was more upset I hadn’t come to her first. And, since she’d heard about my exit from someone else, I no longer had any control over how the message was delivered. Instead of getting to explain to her why I was leaving, my boss viewed me as unprofessional and disloyal. Not exactly the way you want to leave a job. While I was able to eventually smooth things over, it definitely wasn’t how I wanted the situation to go down. Yes, it’s going to be tough keeping such big news confidential, but if you can manage to keep it under wraps until you’ve spoken directly with your boss, you’ll keep the tone and the delivery of the news under your control. 3. Be Prepared to Be an Outsider While moving on to a new gig may be exciting for you, it might not be so great for the colleagues you’re leaving behind. In fact, your departure may spark some pretty intense emotions among your teammates (resentment, jealousy, stress that they’ll have to pick up the pieces), which means you might feel like a bit of an outsider once you’ve given notice. Several years back, I worked with a guy who had a great opportunity to join a competitor and really advance his career. As soon as we all found out, the group was supportive, but it didn’t last. Since my colleague was a senior member of the team, he’d given over a month of notice, which meant we had several weeks to work with him, knowing he was going to one of our top competitors. Not surprisingly, he was quickly excluded from strategy and team meetings, and eventually happy hours and other office events. While it wasn’t easy for him, he recognized this was part of the deal and handled it with grace, which made things a whole lot less awkward for the rest of the team. He ended up leaving on a positive note, with all of us wishing him well on his last day- definitely what you want to happen when you leave a job. It’s not fun to think about, but the reality is, when you’re leaving a team, it’s only natural for your colleagues to see you differently after you’ve resigned. While you’ll still have to do your job and assure a smooth transition, understanding your team will probably have some mixed emotions about your decision will help you get through your last couple weeks more easily. Most of us will have to resign from at least a few jobs in our career, and every time will be a new challenge. But, keep these tips in mind when you’re ready to move on, and you’ll ensure you leave with high recommendations and your reputation in tact. Photo of man leaving courtesy of Shutterstock.

What to leave off your resume

What to leave off your resume What to leave off your resume What to leave off your resume Employers and recruiters take just a few seconds to scan a resume and decide if it’s worth another look, or destined for the circular file. With such a small window of time to impress, every sentence counts. Stop wasting your employers’ attention and your own precious time by stripping your CV of these 15 points. 1. Your whole life history Do you really think someone cares you worked in a nightclub 15 years ago and what  certificates you’ve received for playing in University’s baseball team?  Whenever you update your CV, strip off the deadweight from years ago to keep it as relevant as possible. 2. Non-specific skills 90% of jobseekers describe themselves as ‘proactive’, ‘goal oriented’ or ‘able to perform under  stress’. These phrases are too general and say nothing about you, they just take up space. Instead, be specific, and try to show your skills through achievements. “Marketing” is one thing, “increased sales 20% through an email campaign” is better. 3. Obvious or redundant skills Nowadays Microsoft Word and some practice in paperwork are expected, not extra. This should take up no more than a line in a professional resume, and only if you don’t have enough experience to fill the space with something better. 4. Lies While you may stretch your accomplishments as far as you can, don’t be tempted to outright lie on your resume. The most common areas for job seekers to lie are education, employment dates, job titles, and skills. You risk losing the job entirely, and your reputation will follow you for years in small industries. 5. Job-hopping Moving around too much and many short-term positions can harm your reputation in the eyes of your employer. If you have multiple short jobs, consider combining them into one section, or leaving them out entirely if the gap is not too long. The exception is freelance or consulting work, where short term contracts are expected. 6. Gaps A professional CV shouldn’t have large gaps you can’t explain. Medical leave, caring for family, and other absences should be explained with a few brief sentences. Deal with unemployment gaps proactively be working on certifications and freelance work whenever you can. We like Business Insider’s tips for explaining gaps in employment. 7. Too many duties Your daily routine at your past workplace is not nearly as important as how well you performed then. Listing accomplishments rather than duties, with numbers and figures wherever possible, is recommended by every resume writer. 8. Unrelated details Your resume is a marketing document â€" don’t use your figure skating knowledge to sell yourself to a finance position (unless you know the CEO loves the Winter Olympics). It’s okay to leave out or reduce to one line positions and accomplishments that aren’t related to the job you’re applying for. 9. Typos and poor grammar Spellcheck and a detailed read through will be your best friends to find simple errors before you hit ‘Send’. Employers think sloppy grammar means a sloppy employee. Don’t screw up applications by being too lazy to proofread  your CV. 10. Your photo Unless it was requested in job description, a photo is NOT included in a resume or CV in the English speaking world. Other countries have different protocols. For applications requiring a photo, a clear, smiling, headshot is the classic solution. 11. Fancy design You might be tempted to splash out on a custom resume with flashy fonts and colors, but outside of the design industry (where you should design it yourself!), many hiring managers just find them annoying and gimmicky. Your layout should be clear and simple to help your employer scan your accomplishments easily. Non-typographers won’t care if you use Arial instead of Helvetica. 12. Testimonials Try not to turn CV writing into self-glorification. Your employer can’t verify the truth of your claims, and your best references (for them) are those that will talk candidly about the good and the bad. Testimonials waste valuable space you could fill with your accomplishments and skills â€" let them speak for themselves. 13. Wrong language While making your list of jobs seem engaging and interesting can be hard (especially for janitors), using vivid, punchy, sentences to describe yourself and your skills can make your CV stand out among a pile of applications. Avoid overuse of ‘I’ statements. Consider using a professional CV writing service to really polish your style. 14. Requirements Your CV is not the place to list your office culture, benefits, and salary requirements â€" this can be touched a little in a covering letter, and mostly in the interview, at the offer stage. Unless you are coveted by headhunters (and even then) listing your requirements seems out of touch and combative. 15. Your high school diploma As you gain experience, your high school diploma should be irrelevant to your resume as a whole. Take it off after four years, or after you’ve finished college â€" whichever comes first.

Reasons Why Salary Transparency Is Gaining Popularity

Reasons Why Salary Transparency Is Gaining Popularity Reasons Why Salary Transparency Is Gaining Popularity Salary transparency is an approach to pay and compensation that is the exact opposite of the longstanding norm among most employers, in which what the organization pays to whom is kept largely secret. The only exceptions normally are the compensation packages for senior executive officers at publicly-traded companies, which must be disclosed to the investing public in financial reports per SEC rules. If you have or want a career in human resources, you  will know to justify the maintenance of opaque (as opposed to transparent) salary structures as a means to protect the privacy of individual employees and to avoid the outbreak of workplace jealousies and hostilities over differences in pay. While this is true, there are other, unspoken, reasons as well. These typically motivate the reluctance of most employers even to disclose the salary bands or salary ranges that apply to given job categories, job titles, job descriptions, and are related to discussions of salary policies and salary negotiation tactics. The Exception to Pay Transparency For sales personnel paid a commission basis, the pay formula, if not the actual amounts paid to each employee in sales job categories, is known and transparent. For example, in securities brokerage firms the broker payout grid  is out in the open for all people paid thusly to see. The incentive structure is thus made clear to all concerned.   In regards to the actual amounts earned by salespersons in fields such as securities brokerage (nowadays officially called financial advisory services), insurance sales or real estate sales, what the top earners are making is revealed through the existence of recognition events and recognition awards. The minimum production, gross sales or commissions  required to earn a given award are well-publicized, to give prestige to the winner and to offer incentives to everyone else. Since the formula for converting these metrics into pay also is known, so is the minimum amount earned by the winners. Nonetheless, it is possible for a company with a commission-based pay formula to be opaque rather than transparent in this regard. That is so if the parameters of the pay formula differ by an individual employee, and those parameters, as well as the reasons for the differences therein, are kept secret by the company. A Study on Pay Transparency Chicago-based Challenger, Gray Christmas, a leading outplacement firm, believes that salary transparency probably will become  an increasingly hot topic in the next few years. According to their January 28, 2015 press release on the topic, While salary transparency is still far from widespread, the idea of instituting an open-book policy on what every employee earns is starting to gain traction. In a survey that they conducted among human resources professionals in the final quarter of 2014,  13 percent responded affirmatively to the radical proposition that employees should know exactly how much everyone at the company earns. Another 42 percent were in favor of a less extreme measure, agreeing that companies should only provide salary ranges for departments and positions. Thus, 55% favored some degree of salary transparency. On the opposite side of the ledger, 39% favored keeping all data on pay secret. A caveat with this study is its rather small sample.  Challenger says that it contacted approximately 100 human resources professionals. The firm indicates that blind responses were submitted from a pool representing a variety of industries, regions and company sizes. Issues With Salary Transparency In his statement releasing the survey results, John A. Challenger, CEO of the firm that bears his name, made these salient points: Small differences between co-workers’ salaries can lead to resentment and conflicts over who earns what.An employee with a higher salary may have a unique or in-demand skill. It may have taken a high salary to lure one worker from their previous employer.Maybe the higher earner is simply a more skilled and aggressive negotiator.  Even if an employer reveals the reason for a certain worker’s higher pay, those earning less are likely to remain unhappy.  Resulting acrimony could hurt morale and productivity, and spur increased turnover. Ways to Disclose Salary Ranges Challenger believes that, while  sharing individuals’ salaries is bound to be highly problematic, sharing information about the range of salaries for each position can make a great deal of sense. In particular, employees should be advised on what they can do to move toward the higher end of the scale.   Offer varying levels of transparency depending on the employees level. The example that they offer is the North Shore-LIH Health System in New York, which was featured in a recent  HR Magazine  article  concerning salary transparency. This hospital system offers varying levels of transparency depending on the category of employee. Go fully public, inside and outside your organization. Union workers’ salaries are fully public under collective bargaining. Go semi-public by department or position. Nonunion workers only know the salary range for each position. That reflects the opinion of the  42 percent of respondents to the recent Challenger survey that (also as noted above) favored disclosing information on salary ranges  for departments and/or job categories. Disclose everyones salaries within the entire company. On the extreme end of the spectrum, the proposition favored by 13 percent of survey respondents was that employees should know exactly how much everyone at the company earns. It is practiced by New York-based business analytics firm SumAll. They also were cited in the aforementioned  HR Magazine  article. If you choose full disclosure of everyones compensation in your company, John Challenger nonetheless notes: Many believe that sunshine is the best disinfectant. It will help employees determine their value to the company. It will also force employers to really think about salaries and possibly fix inequities. Ultimately, the decision of whether to institute a policy of salary transparency, the level of transparency, and success of that policy, is likely to be determined by the culture of the company, John Challenger wisely notes. Moreover, he feels strongly that organizations must take a long and honest look at the cultures that they have created. In particular, he warns that opening up the books on salaries is not a magic cure-all. Indeed, in organizations that suffer from long histories of  distrust, animosity, perceptions of favoritism, etc., such revelations are more likely to heighten tensions than to relieve them. Instead, salary transparency must be preceded by a fundamental change in the company culture that inevitably will take time. On the other hand, in a company with a highly collaborative workforce, engaged workers, open-door policies, and a bottom-up management style salary transparency is likely to be a natural extension of the culture already in place.

Starbucks to offer more benefits for transgender employees

Starbucks to offer more benefits for transgender employees Starbucks to offer more benefits for transgender employees On Monday, Starbucks announced that it was adding health care benefits for its transgender employees. The company’s health insurance plans had already been covering gender affirming surgery since 2012, but now they will also include procedures that were previously considered cosmetic like breast reduction, facial feminization, augmentation surgery, and hair transplants.“The approach was driven not just by the company’s desire to provide truly inclusive coverage, and by powerful conversations with transgender partners about how those benefits would allow them to truly be who they are,” Ron Crawford, vice president of benefits at Starbucks, said about the expanded coverage. Starbucks consulted with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to develop its medical benefits policy.Tate Buhrmester, a Starbucks manager, said that the new policy helps transgender employees like him feel like “they matter and their health matters,” because “our procedures aren’ t just cosmetic - they are lifesaving.”Other trans-friendly workplacesAfter the  Affordable Care Act  banned gender identity discrimination, more people started having their procedures covered by insurance plans, Johns Hopkins research has found. A 2016 survey found that 12% of U.S. companies offer at least one transgender-inclusive  health benefit related to transitioning like gender-affirming surgery, mental health counseling, and  prescription drug therapy. The majority of Fortune 500 companies, including companies like Apple,  CVS Health,  General Motors,  Ford Motor,  ATT, General Electric, now offer transgender-inclusive health care benefits, according to the Corporate Equality Index created by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Avoiding Office Obesity 10 Tips to Stay Healthy at Work

Avoiding Office Obesity 10 Tips to Stay Healthy at Work Avoiding Office Obesity 10 Tips to Stay Healthy at Work Two out of three Americans are considered overweight or obese. The country is obsessed with combatting fat; even the First Family has joined in the fight against obesity. What’s the cause? Is it sugary sodas? Readily available fast food? A lack of education? Poverty?   For some it’s possible that work environments are contributing to waistlines. According to Australian researchers, men who sit a desk for more than six hours a day are about two times as likely to be overweight than their counterparts who sit for only 45 minutes a day. Here are a few tips to battle sedentary sluggishness and fight off the impending pounds. 1.  Use the Buddy System If you’re looking to escape office weight gain, chances are that you’re not alone. Poll your office and find someone else who is making healthier choices. Become a team, create a walking club, sit at a healthy lunch table, or perhaps even make workday fitness challenges designed to keep you motivated.  2.  Drink Water That two o’clock feeling after lunch when you struggle to keep your eyelids open and your brain focused could be because you’re dehydrated. The average adult needs to drink 8-10 glasses of water every day to be adequately hydrated. A side benefit of drinking water is that it will keep you full. Try keeping a refillable water bottle at your desk and reach for it when you start to feel a midmorning pang or an urge for an afternoon salty snack.  3.  Stop Boredom Eating Sometimes it’s easy to eat out of sheer boredom or to break up monotonous work. Can’t stare at that spreadsheet for one more minute? It’s time for a snack break. Alternatively, turn those trips to the kitchen into a quick walk around the office or a moment to chat with a coworker. 4. Pack Your Own Food In today’s world of corporate cafeterias filled with heavy comfort food, not to mention break room vending machines stocked with tasty treats, it’s important to manage your food choices. An easy way to get ahead of what you eat is to pack your lunch and snacks after dinner the night before. Once you’re satisfied after dinner, try packing a healthy and balanced meal along with some delicious and nutritious snacks such as raw almonds, fruit, celery and hummus, or whole grain crackers and cheese. When you’ve taken the time to provide yourself with food, it’s easier to make those healthy choices throughout the day. 5.  Stand on Your Own Two Feet Sitting at a desk can be harmful to not only your waistline but also to your muscles. Combat poor posture and bad circulation by walking around throughout the day and occasionally choosing a different working position.   If your company provides standing desks, try one out.   If not, find a higher surface such as a break room counter, or stack boxes on your desk to make a higher surface so that you can use your computer while standing.   You’ll be surprised how different you feel after only an hour.  6.  Get Up and Get Out Grab that fitness friend and take an afternoon walk. For those with restrictive break times, try shortening the amount of time you sit at the lunch table and taking a 15-minute stroll around the block. The little bit of exercise will not only get your blood pumping and make you feel more active, it’ll also help you focus. 7. Try Technology There are many different fitness technologies designed to help people become self-aware about their lifestyles and to help them make positive changes to their routines. Pick up a pedometer and set a daily step goal, or try some newer innovations such as FitBit or Nike FuelBand to help you set realistic activity and exercise goals for your everyday life.   Free mobile applications such as MyFitnessPal will track your food intake and provide helpful feedback to keep you on track by reminding you that you should stick within certain calorie counts or amounts of protein versus carbohydrates consumed. Strava can track your daily walks or runs while telling you the distance you’ve gone and calories burned.  8.  Take the Stairs Skip the elevator and climb those stairs to your desk every morning. Your heart will get pumping, and you’ll be ready to conquer that inbox once you arrive at your desk. 9.  Send Fewer Emails Do you really need to send an email to your coworker 50 feet away, asking them if they would like a PDF or a Word document? Get up and walk over.   The benefit of more face time with your coworkers will be two-fold. You will enjoy having a quick chat, and you’ll also get up from your desk and move around a bit more. 10.  Make it Fun Try starting an office softball league or organizing a company-wide kickball game. You’ll not only feel healthier, but you’ll also get to know your coworkers better and help grow teamwork simultaneously. It’s no easy feat to ignore Monday morning donuts in the office break room or to stay away from the vending machine at two o’clock. However, with a bit of self-awareness and some moral support, you can combat the nine-to-five weight gain.   What else do you do to stay healthy and fit at work? Comment below.
